Quartz Reef was founded in 1996 by Austrian-born winemaker Rudi Bauer on a site in Bendigo named for the gold-bearing quartz deposit once mined beneath it. Bauer, who made Central Otago's first gold-medal Pinot Noir back in 1991 at a neighbouring vineyard, converted the entire estate to biodynamic farming in 2007 and never looked back.
This Single Ferment expression is hand-picked from the estate's north-facing Bendigo slopes, fermented with indigenous yeast and aged with real attention to tannin balance, delivering the dark cherry, spice, and earthy structure that's made Quartz Reef one of the most respected names in New Zealand Pinot Noir.
A genuinely serious Pinot Noir, best opened a little ahead of time to let it fully unfurl.
