Port Charlotte takes its name from the quiet fishing village on Islay's west coast, home to a defunct distillery whose spirit lives on through Bruichladdich's heavily peated range. Distilled from malt peated to 40ppm — measured before the smoke softens through distillation and ageing — this is Bruichladdich's answer to the island's smokier traditions, built on a foundation of bourbon barrels and French oak wine casks that bring real complexity to an intensely smoky single malt.
On the nose, expect sweet peat and maritime aromas of seaweed and rockpools, softening into citrus and a gentle sweetness as it opens in the glass. The palate carries that same Islay signature — smoke and brine balanced by malt sweetness and a touch of vanilla — finishing long and warming.
A whisky for slow evenings: pour neat or with a splash of water, and pair with smoked fish, charcuterie, or simply a quiet conversation by the fire.
