Jägermeister's story starts not with hunting, but with vinegar: Wilhelm Mast founded a vinegar business in Wolfenbüttel, Germany in 1878, which his son Curt later transformed into a spirits company. After years of refining the recipe, Curt — an avid hunter — finally perfected his herbal liqueur in 1934, naming it "Master Hunter" in honour of his passion.
The recipe, unchanged since its creation, blends 56 herbs, roots, fruits, and spices — including citrus peel, anise, ginger, and saffron — macerated and aged a full year in oak. The result is sweet, herbal, and distinctly its own: medicinal in the best sense, with anise and licorice notes layered over genuine complexity.
Best served ice-cold as a shot, though it's also a surprisingly capable base for warming winter cocktails.
