Fernet Hunter's story spans three generations and two countries. Raphael Holzer's great-grandfather helped build the Fernet Stock empire in Trieste before relocating it to Linz, Austria during the Second World War — a family legacy in bitters that Raphael revived decades later with his father, working from a recipe dating to the early 1900s. The botanicals — arnica, orris root, and lavender — are handpicked and dried each year during hunting season in Austria's Brunnwald forest, which is how the bitter got its name.
The result is more modern and approachable than a traditional medicinal fernet: floral and citrusy on the nose, with dried orange, caramel, and heather coming through on a smooth, lingering finish.
Try it simply in a highball with soda and mint, or as a more contemporary alternative wherever a classic Italian-style bitter is called for.
