Hendrick's traces its name to William Grant & Sons, the Speyside whisky distillery founded in 1886 — though the gin itself wasn't created until over a century later, when master distiller Lesley Gracie and colleague David Stewart began experimenting with an unusual idea: gin infused with cucumber and rose. The story goes that Stewart dreamed it up one summer afternoon, enjoying cucumber sandwiches in his garden.
The result, launched in 1999, blends spirit from two rare antique stills with Bulgarian rose and cucumber essence — a genuinely unconventional gin that helped spark the entire modern gin renaissance.
Serve with tonic and a slice of cucumber rather than the usual citrus — it's how Hendrick's was built to be enjoyed.
