Title

"Aromas of dark berries, licorice and toasty new oak introduce the 2020 La Croix St Georges, a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy wine that's broad and muscular in style. A gentler hand with extraction would see it score higher, as this beautifully situated vineyard certainly has plenty of potential."

91+ The Wine Advocate

Located on the Pomerol plateau, the vineyards of Chateau La Croix St. Georges are planted only one row of vines away from the famous vineyards of Le Pin and they are very close to Vieux Château Certan and Chateau Petit Village as well.

The 4.2 hectare Pomerol vineyard of Chateau La Croix St. Georges is planted to 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. On average, the vines are 38 years of age.

To produce the wine of Chateau La Croix St. Georges, vinification takes place in four, open-top, wooden, 70 hectoliter, fermentation vats. Everything is done by hand at La Croix Saint Georges. Malolactic fermentation is performed in barrels.

The wines are aged in 100% new, French oak barrels for 16 to 20 months. Several of the barrels have a unique cigar shape, that the owner, Jean Philippe Janoueix prefers.

The cigar-shaped barrels allow for more contact with the lees and wood. This gives the wines of Chateau La Croix St. Georges an oaky component. So oak averse tasters might not be fans of the wine. While the wines here can lack consistency, this is an estate to watch, as they have a lot of potential to produce some very good wine.

The cellar of La Croix St. Georges has a unique design featuring a sculpture, representing St. Georges fighting on horseback to remind people that this chateau previously belonged to the Chivalrous order of the Hospitalliers of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem.
