Title

What we know of today as Chateau Charmail dates back to the 1500s when it was founded by the Trevey de Charmail family. Vines were not planted until the 17th century. It was acquired by Olivier Goudet and Valerie Liquard in 2021.

The vineyard spans approximately 28 hectares, with soils comprising gravel, colluvium, and clay-limestone. Situated on the left bank of the Gironde estuary, providing a favorable microclimate for viticulture. Not far from Ch. Sociando Mallet.

Predominantly 37% Merlot, complemented by 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, and 12% Petit Verdot.

A lot of effort goes into producing the wine of Chateau Charmail. This starts with a 15-day cold soak at 5 degrees Celsius prior to fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks with a 21-day cuvaison. Malolactic fermentation takes place in vat. The wine of Chateau Charmail is aged for close to 12 months in an average of 30% new, French oak barrels.

✅ Excellent Vintage – 2020 was one of the standout vintages in Bordeaux, producing wines with great concentration, freshness, and balance. Château Charmail 2020 benefits from this exceptional year, delivering both quality and value.

Haut-Médoc Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel – Château Charmail holds the top-tier Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel status, a mark of consistent excellence and one of the highest recognitions in this prestigious classification.

Modern, Approachable Style – While still structured, the 2020 vintage is known for its silky tannins, ripe black fruit flavors (blackberry, cassis), and a touch of spice and elegance, making it more approachable than older, more austere Médoc wines.

Blend Composition – Typically Merlot-driven (around 40%), blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, giving it both roundness and complexity. The higher Merlot content makes it softer and more charming compared to Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux wines.

Value for Money – Offers top Bordeaux quality at a very attractive price, making it an excellent alternative to more expensive Médoc wines.

Drinkability – Enjoyable now with decanting, but also capable of ageing gracefully for 8–10 years.
